ALCS GAME 3: PREVIEW

TALE OF THE TAPE: GAME 3 STARTERS (from www.yankees.com)

YANKEES - Andy Pettite

"I threw 3 bullpens since my last start. I'm hoping that's going to keep me feeling really sharp"

BREAKDOWN
  • 2009 Regular Season - 14-8, 32 GS, 4.16 ERA
  • Pettite is 12-10 for his career against the Angels, but historically has struggled in Angel Stadium. This year he posted a 0-2 record with a mammoth ERA of 7.84.
  • Of course Pettite has the experience card on his side, with a 15 and 9 record in the postseason, he has over 218 postseason innings under his belt.

ANGELS - Jered Weaver

"You know, they've got guys 1 through 9 that can hurt you. But so did Boston."

BREAKDOWN
  • A successful 2009 season with a record of 16-8, 33 GS, 3.75 ERA.
  • Weaver has been stellar at home where he’s lowered his overall ERA by almost an entire point: 9-3, 17 GS, 2.90 ERA
  • His career record against the Yankees is 4-2 through 7 games with a 4.88 ERA, In 2009 he split 2 games against New York with an ERA of 5.59.
TV: FOX 4:13 PM ET

COMMENTARY:
Once again Andy Pettite is asked to set the tone for the Yankees as they head into their first away game of the series. Pettitte is headed into a venue where he’s had no wins this season and is 6-7 with a 4.19 ERA for his career, but he is one win shy of having the most wins in postseason history which speaks to how prolific he’s been when it counts the most. Pettitte can make his struggles in Angel Stadium a thing of the past, but the Bronx Bombers must liven up their bats in order to make this happen.

CC You in Game Four

According to the Star Ledger, Joe Girardi has official announced that CC Sabathia will pitch game 4 of the ALCS. This means that he will be going on 3 days rest. Now in the past, when CC has gone on 3 days rest in the playoffs, it hasn't worked out well for him (I don't think I need to go into what happened last year). However, this year is different. The Yankees cautiously gave him lots of rest down the stretch in hopes that it would allow him to pitch better in the playoffs, and so far, they've been right.

After looking absolutely dominant in his first two outings, CC will face his first true test as not only will he not be as well-rested, but he'll be pitching in Angel Stadium for the 3rd time this season. CC is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA at the Big A this season.

Despite those numbers, I still feel it's the right move for Joe Girardi. Say the Halos win tomorrow afternoon, making the series 2-1 Yankees. Would you really feel safe handing the ball to Chad Gaudin with the Angels oh-so-close to evening the series? If that were to happen, pitching CC in game 5 would be a lot less significant. The Yankees might be able to notch a win but would then be throwing the always-frustrating A.J. Burnett out there for game 6. Plus if CC were to lose, then those two games would become must-wins for the Yanks, a situation I can assure you they do not want to be in.

Now there is another side to this argument and that is Chad Gaudin and the Yankees bullpen. Gaudin pitched extremely well down the stretch, going into the 6th inning in 3 of his last 4 starts. Plus he didn't pitch in last night's bullpen extravaganza so he would be very well rested. If he can give the Yankees 6 quality innings (which he's proven to be able to do, even if he later falters in the 7th) then Girardi could turn it over to the 'pen to close it out.

That's one of the key advantages the Yankees have this post-season: their bullpen. Joba Chamberlain to Phil Hughes to Mariano Rivera makes up on the best back-end bullpens we've seen in a very long time. So if Chad Gaudin could go 6 or even 5 (don't forget about K-Rob) the Yanks would still have a good shot at winning. However, all of that goes down the drain if John Lackey can pitch the way he did against the Red Sox in the ALDS.

Going with Sabathia gives the Yankees their best shot at winning and I believe this to be a good move by Joe Girardi. However, my feelings don't matter in this situation. All that matters now is how Andy Pettitte the Yankees can fare in game three against Jared Weaver and his halos. Get pumped for a good one and I'll CC you in game 4

Around The Horn

Whenever a Yankee pitcher records a punch out, Jorge Posada throws the baseball around the horn where it reaches some pretty legendary hands. That baseball hits the leather owned by Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira, otherwise known as possibly the greatest infield in baseball history.

The members of this infield have already accomplished some impressive feats: Jeter and Cano are the first double-play combination to both record 200 hits, Alex Rodriguez recorded his 12th straight season with 30+ HRs and 100+ RBIs, that's a record in itself, and Mark Teixeira is already notching switch-hitting records. Each of these are pretty amazing in themselves, however it's the combination of the three that separates this infield from those of years past.

Sure you could make the case for Murderer's Row, the Big Red Machine or even the 2008 Florida Marlins (who each hit at least 25 HRs), but none come anywhere close to the power that is the 2009 Yankees infield. A-Rod and Captain clutch are both first-ballot Hall of Famers, and Teix and Robbie could theoretically join them. All four have/are putting up incredible numbers in their career and I doubt I need to go into much detail there. If you add in the great defense of all of them (and the World Series ring they could possibly receive this season) it puts them over the top as the greatest of all time.

Personally, I wonder if Jorge, Jose, or even Francisco Cervelli ever thinks about who he's tossing to when he throws around the horn.

*About Me*
Surprisingly enough, I was born in Boston and grew up a Red Sox fan. Now before you get on me for that, I switched over to the good side in February 2004. You got it, when A-Rod was traded to the Yankees. I will admit now, I wish I had a better reason for joining Yankee Universe but I'm here now and I love it. About a year ago, I started my own Yankee blog at Bronxrumors.blogspot.com and it has been fairly successful. I started multiple accounts for it including MLBlogs, Facebook, Twitter and even Youtube. I really recommend you check out the YouTube page as I have uploaded some good Yankee tributes on there. But anyways, I love writing about the Yankees and I hope to contribute to this page a lot in the future.

New Writers, New Yankees

I'm sure you have noticed the posts about the new writers we have here. We are very proud to have them here and please comment their posts whenever you can and give them your support!

As for the New Yankees, what I mean by that is that the Yankees seem like a whole different team this year. Alex Rodriguez is on fire. David Robertson emerged as a possible set-up man if they want to make Joba and Hughes starters. Alex Rodriguez is on fire. Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett all are fitting in perfectly. Oh, and Alex Rodriguez is on fire.

Never count these Yankees out. Never. They are destined for greatness.

WORK, WORK, WORK

To characterize this team as a compilation of superstars is to ignore the depth and more importantly the true make-up of these New York Yankees. This is not the same team we have seen in recent years, an odd combination of studded puzzle pieces that never quite fit together. Gone is the concern for individual achievements over team accomplishments, the philosophy that talent alone trumps work and team chemistry. With it’s bloated payroll and impressive lineup I put it to you that in its essence this is truly a blue collar team, a team that works through the errors, the unfortunate bounces, the opportunities lost, work, work, work.

Game 2 of the ALCS is a perfect example: How else do you explain overcoming wild pitches, 3 infield errors, hitting into 3 straight double plays, the middle of the order going 0 for 8. Work, work, work. Alex Rodriguez goes 0 for 5 after charging home plate in game 1, and in the bottom of the 9th with an 0-2 count goes yard for his 3rd game-tying HR of the post-season. Work, work, work. Johnny Damon who hit .083 in the Minnesota series has shown up big time in this series posting a .364 batting average through two games and flashing the leather in key moments tonight. Work, work, work.

These Yankees know anyone can come through in the clutch. The success of the bottom of this lineup in close games have made this team legendary in my eyes, must we recount the number of comeback and walk-off wins? The soul of this team belongs to the likes of Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera, and Robinson Cano to name a few. This team can overcome squandering a bases loaded opportunity with A-Rod at the plate, only to see Jerry Hairston, Jr (WHO?) get a leadoff single in his first postseason plate appearance and score the winning run. Most people will discount this win to Izturis’ error, but as Captain America put it “you gotta give credit to Jerry for running hard the whole way”.

Everybody works, everybody contributes, everybody runs hard the whole way, this is the 2009 New York Yankees rallying cry. As Mariano Rivera put it when asked what it took to win a game like this tonight, “everything, it took everything, it took everything from everybody”.

About me:

I owe my allegiance to the Yankees to my Father who shared with me his passion for baseball and love for the Pinstripes. In Cuba I was immersed in baseball from a young age, it is after all a right of passage for Cubans and Cuban-Americans both in the Island and in Miami where I reside. I'm fascinated by the unexplored aspects of this game, the hidden rules about behavior on the field and in the locker room, the undefined characteristics of team chemistry, the unequivocal influence of the baseball gods, in short the intricate nature of a sport that in my humble opinion is still America's game. I hope you enjoy my perspective on things and join in the conversation. Go Yankees!

Random Predictions for the ALCS

NOTICE: I will be away all weekend watching the Yankees at my friends house and visiting grandparents. I will not be posting until at the earliest Sunday.

Here are some predictions for the ALCS:

-CC Sabathia starts three games
-A.J. Burnett emerges as a postseason ace
-Andy Pettite struggles
-Nick Swisher and Johnny Damon break out of their slumps
-Brett Gardner starts more games than Melky Cabrera
-Robinson Cano struggles
-Jose Molina catches at least two games in the series
-Joba Chamberlain assumes the 8th-inning role from Phil Hughes after Hughes blows a save in game 1 or 2.
-Alex Rodriguez continues his hot streak and so does Derek Jeter
-Freddy Guzman and/or Brett Gardner wins a game for the Yankees

OVER/UNDER

15 innings Pitched: CC Sabathia- over
ERA of 3.50 A.J. Burnett: under
HomeRuns in ALCS 2: Alex Rodriguez-push
Walk-off wins Yankees 1: Push

FINAL PREDICTION:

Yankees win game one 5-2
Yankees win game two 8-0
Angels win game three 7-2
Angels win game four 3-2
Yankees win game five 6-4
Angels win game six 10-6
Yankees win game seven 5-4

Yankees win series in seven games

Yankees Drop Hinske, Add Guzman

In a surprising, wonderful, great, awesome, any good word possible move the Yankees have dropped Eric Hinske off their playoff roster and added Freddy Guzman. As a Yankees fan I am extremely extremely thrilled by this move. Hinske is a pointless player to have on the roster and Guzman adds speed if the Yankees start Gardner (which they should.)

ERIC HINSKE: Plays OF, Pinch-hits

ANALYSIS: Why do the Yankees need a pinch-hitter? They would only need one for Jose Molina, but they have Jorge Posada for that.

The Future of Jon Papelbon

With the Yankees win over the Minnesota Twins yesterday, they will go to the ALCS to play the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Once the Angels swept the Redsox, an interesting question came up: Will this be the last game Jon Papelbon pitches in a Redsox uniform? I hope so!

Here are teams that would be good fits for Papelbon:

TAMPA BAY RAYS: Would be a great fit, but would NEVER ever happen.

DETROIT TIGERS: May be the best fit if the Redsox are willing to send him to an AL team.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES: Great fit if the Phillies are willing to do it. They would have to get rid of Lidge first.

CHICAGO CUBS: Maybe the Cubs would be a good fit, but they have both Kevin Gregg and Carlos Marmol.

HOUSTON ASTROS: Need a closer with Jose Valverde becoming a free agent.

PREDICTION: The Redsox keep Papelbon and let Billy Wagner go as a free agent.

UPDATE 9:08 PM EST: The reason the Redsox would get rid of Papelbon is because they feel that Daniel Bard is a capable MLB closer.

UPDATE 9:10 PM EST: Check out this prediction in the Miami Herald....bottom of the article...CRAZY!

What a Game

Two down, one to go.

I was at the Yankees game last night and boy was it amazing. I was jumping, screaming, and getting chills all at the same time. I will never forget this game and for some reason, Alex Rodriguez loves it when I am at Yankees games!

I was at his walk-off grand slam game.

Also, Joe Nathan must hate me! I was at the May 15th game in which he gave up a walk-off RBI single to Melky Cabrera.

Regardless, it was the greatest game i've ever been to and I will never forget it. The fact that the Redsox lost and the Yankees won on the same night, again, makes it that much more special.

Grow Up

I was at the Yankees game last night. What an amazing game. I had some great fans around me that were talking to me about the game high-fiving me and didn't miss a single pitch. (Of course excluding the people sitting next to me who left in the 8th inning because their 3 year old needed sleep)

There were, however, terrible fans a few sections over from me. A man wearing a Mickey Mantle t-shirt did something, I don't know what, wrong. The security officer came up and talked to the man. The officer did not take him away. Then, with another officer, they did take him away. The Mantle man tried to retailliate and not allow them to take him but it did not work. He made some hand motions at them and was a very bad person. So whats wrong with one bad fan? Most of the fans around him were cheering for the drunk guy and booing the officers. Really? They're doing their jobs and for that they should be cheered. This paricite of a drunk guy shouldn't have gone to a Yankees game in the 1st place. Give your tickets to some kid or something. Don't waste your time at an amazing, amazing game being a complete and total idiot.

The fans around me did not cheer or boo, for those who are wondering.

What a Season for Alex Rodriguez

What a season. I am currently speechless and that does not happen very often. Alex Rodriguez has now hit for 100 RBI on the season and 7-YES I MEAN SEVEN RBI in the top of the 6th inning in todays game. First, Rodriguez hit a three-run homer. Next, the Yankees got 2nd and 3rd with two outs for Mark Teixeira. They intentionally walked Teixeira to get to A-Rod. A-Rod then hit a grand slam and now has 100 RBI on the season.

I am going to be honest here. I was not a fan of Rodriguez going into the season. I was one of the people making jokes like "the Yankees should trade A-Rod for Joe Crede" but now I have to issue an apology to him. Rodriguez has been the Yankees MVP this season. Rodrgiuez has been the most valuable player to his team in the AL outside of Joe Mauer in my opinion. Mark Teixeira took off when Rodriguez came back. Rodriguez hit for 100 RBI in less time than most of the players that hit for 80. It is unbelievable that Rodriguez hit for 100 RBI and it just shows how good of a player he is.

Can he do this in the playoffs? I think so. If game two of the ALDS is a night game, I will be there. I was at Game 4 of the 07 ALDS when A-Rod hit a HR. I am very, very interested in seeing how he does in the postseason. I predict in the ALDS he hits .310 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.

Oh-one more note. Yankees fans or any fans that are reading this: please do not boo Alex Rodriguez in the post-season. Don't boo him. I don't care if he goes 0-489379537 do not boo him. He relies on the fans and his teammates for support. So please give it to him.
