PREDICTIONS:
TONIGHT: Yankees win 6-2
TUESDAY: Orioles win 7-4
WEDNESDAY: Yankees win 9-2

The Joba Problem
Joba Chamberlain pitched 3 innings today, throwing only 35 pitches in the process. The reason the Yankees pulled Joba out of the game so quickly is because they decided that he will have an entire new set of rules. Joba will work his way up to being able to pitch a full game for the Bronx Bombers. The question is though....why? I know Joba has to have his rules, but why did they have to start all over? What happens if another pitcher gets hurt in the 3rd, has to leave the game, and they need the whole bullpen to be used then? Why now? I am disgusted at the way the Yankees have handled Joba.
Suggestion to the Mets
Everyone once in a while I do a post in which I make a suggestion to a team. Well next up in the series is a group of suggestions to the New York Mets.
Here is how to fix the Mets.
-Fire Jerry Manuel
-Fire Omar Minaya
-Fire entire medical staff
-Fire Hitting and Pitching Coaches
-Trade Jose Reyes to the Boston Redsox for Jacoby Ellsbury and Lars Anderson (at least.)
-Sign John Lackey
-Sign Chone Figgins
Jerry Manuel should be fired because his team (the Mets) do not even know the fundamentals of baseball. If a team isn't playing well, thats one thing, but if a team drops pop ups, doesn't touch third base, and throws to first when no one is covering....that is a problem. Also, Jerry, not every player can play every position.
Omar Minaya is a trainwreck. Enough said.
The Mets have been one of the most injured teams in baseball and that can't just be because the players are fragile. The staff must have something to do with it.
The Mets have not hit or pitched well this year. Even when the team was healthy, they struggled.
The Reyes trade would really shake up the Mets. Ellsbury helps out in the outfield, with Gary Sheffield gone. Lars Anderson can be the future 1st baseman of the Mets.
Lackey and Figgins are both free agents in 2010 and are both members of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim now. Lackey can be a top 2 starter, while Figgins can play nearly every position.

Apology to Sergio Mitre
Dear Sergio Mitre,
I am very, very sorry I had repeatedly said that I did not want you on the Yankees. I wrote that I wanted you designated, released, traded, put on every kind of waivers possible, and even at one point I think I said I wanted you to pitch for the Redsox just so that the Yankees could beat them. Yesterday you proved me wrong....for one start at least. You pitched 6.1 Innings of scoreless, 1 hit baseball, with the sinker moving. You showed that you have done your job as the 5th starter.
I apologize,
Brandon

Yankees Recap: 8/29 Chicago Whitesox AT New York Yankees
Prior to the 2003 season, the Yankees were involved in a big bidding war with the Boston Red Sox for the services of Cuban defector Jose Contreras. The Yankees ultimately won that battle, but in the long run Contreras was a bad signing. The Yankees got a little revenge yesterday, pounding the now Chicago White Sox pitcher en route to a 10-0 Yankees victory.
The game also marked the finest performance this season by Sergio Mitre since his recall by the big club back on July 21. He retired the first 13 White Sox to start the game and allowed just one hit over 6 1/3 innings, before being forced to depart when a line drive off the bat of A.J. Pierzynski struck his right forearm. For now, Mitre will be considered day-to-day after the imprint of the baseball was clearly visible on his arm.
The Yankees offense gave Mitre plenty of support early and often. Consecutive base hits by Nick Swisher, Robinson Cano, and Jerry Hairston Jr. (2 RBI), starting in place of Melky Cabrera, put the Bombers up 2-0 in the 2nd inning. A walk to Jose Molina and a sac bunt by Derek Jeter set things up for Johnny Damon, who delivered both runners with a double for a 4-0 Yankees advantage.
The Yankees continued the onslaught in the 4th with another four-run outburst. Jeter singled to start the frame and Damon reached on an error by Jayson Nix that allowed both runners to move into scoring position. An Alex Rodriguez single and a Hideki Matsui double extended the lead to 6-0 and sent Contreras to the showers. Swisher greeted D.J. Carrasco with an RBI single and Cano brought the final run home with a productive ground out.
Mitre cruised through the first four innings, his slider working as effectively as it ever had, and recording five ground ball outs plus a pair of strikeouts. Rodriguez temporarily kept the perfect game going when he dove to his right to snare Paul Konerko's grounder and threw out the White Sox 1st baseman to start the 5th inning. But DH Jim Thome ripped a line drive past Mark Teixeira to break up the no-no and perfect game in one swing of the bat.
Mitre walked Brent Lillibridge to open the 7th before Pierzynski's ball ricocheted off Mitre's arm and went behind the mound. Before feeling the pain, the Yankees starter tracked the ball down and threw out the White Sox catcher at 1st base for the inning's first out. Trainer Gene Monahan and manager Joe Girardi quickly came to the mound and immediately got Mitre out of there once they saw the swelling that had begun. The White Sox wouldn't benefit from Mitre's removal though, as Chad Gaudin came on and allowed just one walk in 2 2/3 innings while striking out four.
Game Notes
Alex Rodriguez belted his 23rd home run of the season in the 8th inning for the game's final tally. It was home run #576 for his career, putting him 7 behind Mark McGwire for 8th place on the all-time list.
Derek Jeter had his 7th 3-hit game of the month and his 14th multi-hit game. He's now 13 hits shy of tying Lou Gehrig's franchise record.
Joba Chamberlain goes in the series finale this afternoon (1 P.M. ET) as the Yankees go for the series sweep. Girardi would not reveal if Chamberlain was on a pitch count as has been rumored. Freddy Garcia makes his third start of the season for the White Sox.

Jose Contreras to Start Today for the Whitesox
Jose Contreras will start today for the Whitesox today, replacing the TBA sign. Conteras, a former Yankee, is 5-12 with a 5.09 ERA this year. Contreras was 15-7, 4.64 with the Yankees from 2003-04 before he was traded for Esteban Loiaza. He is 2-5, 4.20 in seven career starts against the Yankees since.
Game Recap: Friday August 28th Whitesox AT Yankees
Home runs, strong pitching, walk off wins, and whipped cream facials have been the mark of ball games played at the new Yankee Stadium this season. Last night’s game with the Chicago White Sox was right out of the 2009 playbook. Robinson Cano crushed a 3-run home run in the bottom of 10th inning to give the Yankees a 5-2 victory and made Cano the recipient of pie ala Burnett.
Left-hander Randy Williams struck out Mark Teixeira and then got some help from the wind as Alex Rodriguez‘ deep fly to center died short of the warning track. But Williams walked Hideki Matsui and Nick Swisher, setting up a showdown with Cano, who had been hitless in four at-bats on the night. After working a 2-2 count, Cano launched a Williams fastball into the Yankees bullpen for the team’s 11th walk-off win of the season. The strong winds had no chance to play a factor since the ball more of a line drive than fly ball. Brian Bruney worked a scoreless top of the 10th to improve to 4-0.
CC Sabathia had given the Yankees a dominant outing, striking out 10 batters through six innings. But the big man, protecting a 2-0 lead built on home runs by Derek Jeter and Johnny Damon, ran into trouble in the 7th. If not for some key defensive plays, Sabathia may very well have left the game with the Yankees trailing.
Jermaine Dye started the 7th with a double and Sabathia issued his first walk of the game, putting Carlos Quentin aboard. Alex Rios‘ double to right cut the Yankees lead in half and put the tying and go ahead runs in scoring position. One out later, Sabathia induced a ground ball by Ramon Castro. Quentin, running on contact, was easily gunned down at the plate by Rodriguez. The Yankees third baseman then made a huge play, diving into foul territory to snare Jayson Nix‘ fair ball that barely went over the third base bag. Though he had no play to make, A-Rod’s stop prevented not only a run from scoring, but a bigger inning from occurring.
Gordon Beckham lined a game tying single to right, but Nick Swisher came up with, arguably, his best throw of the season- a one-hopper to Jose Molina, who thrust his right leg out to block the plate and tagged out his White Sox counterpart Castro for the inning’s final out.
Game Notes
Derek Jeter hit his 22nd lead off home run, putting in him sole possession of second place on the career franchise list. He’s just two home runs behind Rickey Henderson for the #1 spot. The home run was also the 223rd of his career, pushing him past Don Mattingly for 10th place on the team’s career list. The home run was his lone hit, and number 2,705, 16 behind Lou Gehrig.
CC Sabathia finished August 5-0, 2.64 and is 7-1, 2.95 since the All-Star break.

September-Call Up Options
I recently commented on a Chad Jennings blog post and asked him who he thought would be called up in September, if Ramiro Pena could play CF in the MLB yet, and if Austin Jackson could play all three outfield positions.
Here was his response:
The call-up situation changed today with the announcement that Joba Chamberlain will be pitching every five days, but only going a few innings at a time. That likely means more pitchers going up than I originally expected.
Of the five pitchers on the 40-man -- Melancon, Claggett, Ramirez, Albaladejo and Dunn -- I now think three will go up on September 1 and the other two will go after the season. I'll take a guess that Albaladejo is the one most likely to go up on September 1.
Postion players, I think only Cervelli and Pena will go up on September 1. After the season, I think Duncan, Miranda and maybe Jackson.Pena looks good in center field, but I wouldn't have him start a game there in New York. Maybe late in a game that's already decided. For a guy who's hardly played the position, playing center field in a big league ballpark is going to be quite a bit different from a minor league park.
No doubt Jackson can play all three spots in the big leagues right now and be well above average defensively.

Series Preview: Chicago WhiteSox AT New York Yankees
The Whitesox come to the Bronx tonight to take on the Yankees for a 3 game set.
*Quick note* Jake Peavy will NOT be pitching in this series.
FRIDAY: LHP Mark Buehrle (11-7, 3.92) vs. LHP CC Sabathia (15-7, 3.59)
Notes: CC Sabathia is 6-0 lifetime in 10 head to head starts against Buehrle. Earlier this year these two aces faced off....Melky Cabrera hit for the cycle in that game, as the Yankees beat the Sox 8-5. Buehrle is 1-6 with a 6.84 ERA lifetime vs. the Yanks. CC Sabathia is 15-4 with a 3.77 ERA.
SATURDAY: TBA vs. RHP Sergio Mitre (2-1, 6.82)
As of now I have no clue who will start this game. Mitre faced the Chisox earlier this year, losing in a 10-5 loss. He pitched 3 innings giving up 7 hits and 5 ER. In his career he is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 3 starts against the Whitesox.
SUNDAY: RHP Freddy Garcia (0-1, 6.75) vs. RHP Joba Chamberlain (8-4, 4.34)
Garcia was wanted in spring training by the Yankees, but chose the Mets instead. Garcia is 4-3 with a 4.19 ERA in 9 career starts against the Yankees. Joba faced the Whitesox 5 times in his career (all in relief) pitching 5 innings giving up 5 hits and 1 ER.
PREDICTIONS:
FRIDAY: Yankees win 6-2
SATURDAY: Whitesox win 9-6
SUNDAY: Whitesox win 5-3

The Phil Coke Problem
Phil Coke has pitched in 59 games this year, seven more than Mariano Rivera for the team lead. Coke has blown five saves, the next most is one for a combined five pitchers. Coke is 4-3 with a 5.05 ERA following yesterdays horrible outing. Coke does have an impressive .209 Batting Average Against vs. Lefties. Coke is also 4-1 with a 3.19 ERA at home and an 0-2 record with a 7.84 ERA away. The main problem with Coke, however is that he has given up six homeruns to lefty hitters. The Yankees will most likely call-up either Mike Dunn or Zach Kroenke come September, and with Damaso Marte coming back as another lefty he won't have to pitch as much.

Minor League Recap (8/24-8/26)
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (71-57) had a very poor start to the week, losing all three games.
(8/24) The Buffalo Bisons took game three of the series by a score of 7-2. Anthony Claggett dropped to below .500 (6-7) after going 5 inn. allowing 7 hits and 2 earned. Zach Kroenke had another poor outing in relief, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned in 2 inn. Yurendell de Caster had a 2-run single (18) in the loss.
(8/25) The Bisons split the series with the Yankees after shutting them down; 4-0. Ivan Nova pitched a strong 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and just 1 earned. Mark Melancon got rocked in his two innings in relief, allowing 5 hits and 3 earned.
(8/26) SWB lost the opener to the Syracuse Chiefs 4-3. Kei Igawa fell to 9-8 after he went just 4.2 inn. and gave up 8 hits and 2 earned (4 runs). Mike Dunn and Edwar Ramirez pitched well in relief, combining for 5 strikeouts over 4.1. Yurendell de Caster hit home run number 4 (20) and Colin Curtis hit number 6 (24).
Transactions: C Brian Peterson was placed on the 7-day DL.
Performer of the Week: Really no player well deserving. Edwar Ramirez (3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K) or Mike Dunn (2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 K).
The Yankees remain 2.5 games ahead of Syracuse in the division.

Yankees Have Interest in Brad Penny
According to the NY Post, the Yankees are interested in signing RHP Brad Penny to replace Sergio Mitre in the rotation. Penny would cost $100,00 to sign for the Yankees, or any other team interested in signing him (besides the Redsox.)
I like the idea of this, as long as it doesn't get in the way. What I mean by that is that I would NOT want Brad Penny on the Yankees playoff roster. I would like him as a September starter to fill in the last spot over Mitre. Other teams interested are the Rockies, Marlins, and Giants. I think the best fit for him is the Rockies.

Previewing the Yankees Roster Part I
Every month we will preview the Yankees 2010 Roster based on our opinions of who the Yankees will sign.
Here are the Yankees Free Agents for next year:
C-Jose Molina
1b-None
2b-None
3b-None
SS-Jerry Hairston Jr.
LF-Johnny Damon
CF-None
RF-Eric Hinske, Xavier Nady
DH-Hideki Matsui
SP-Andy Pettite
RP-None
CP-None
So here is what I project will happen with those players:
Jose Molina-No contract offered
Jerry Hairston Jr.-No contract offered
Johnny Damon-Offered Arbitration, accepted
Eric Hinske-No contract offered
Xavier Nady-No contract offered
Hideki Matsui-No contract offered
Andy Pettite-Re-Signed to a 1 Year Deal
So here is how the roster would look
C-Jorge Posada, Francisco Cervelli
1b-Mark Texeira
2b-Robinson Cano
3b-Alex Rodriguez, Ramiro Pena
SS-Derek Jeter,
Lf-Jason Bay (signed to a 5 year $85 Million deal in offseason)
Cf-Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner
Rf-Nick Swisher, Shelley Duncan
DH-Johnny Damon
SP-CC Sabathia
SP-A.J. Burnett
SP-Joba Chamberlain
SP-Andy Pettite/Jarrod Washburn if Pettite retires
SP-Phil HughesSecurity Starters (in case of injury) Ian Kennedy, Alfredo Aceves, Josh Towers
Long Relief-Alfredo Aceves
Middle Relief- Dave Robertson, Phil Coke, Zach Kroenke
Set-Up- Damaso Marte, Danys Baez (signed to a 2 year deal, the Yankees have been wanting him for a long time)
Closer-Mariano Rivera
So, in my opinion, the Yankees will get younger this offseason, with the bench especially getting younger.
Here are the Yankees Free Agents for next year:
C-Jose Molina
1b-None
2b-None
3b-None
SS-Jerry Hairston Jr.
LF-Johnny Damon
CF-None
RF-Eric Hinske, Xavier Nady
DH-Hideki Matsui
SP-Andy Pettite

CP-None
So here is what I project will happen with those players:
Jose Molina-No contract offered
Jerry Hairston Jr.-No contract offered
Johnny Damon-Offered Arbitration, accepted
Eric Hinske-No contract offered
Xavier Nady-No contract offered
Hideki Matsui-No contract offered
Andy Pettite-Re-Signed to a 1 Year Deal
So here is how the roster would look
C-Jorge Posada, Francisco Cervelli
1b-Mark Texeira
2b-Robinson Cano
3b-Alex Rodriguez, Ramiro Pena
SS-Derek Jeter,
Lf-Jason Bay (signed to a 5 year $85 Million deal in offseason)
Cf-Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner
Rf-Nick Swisher, Shelley Duncan
DH-Johnny Damon
SP-CC Sabathia
SP-A.J. Burnett
SP-Joba Chamberlain
SP-Andy Pettite/Jarrod Washburn if Pettite retires
SP-Phil HughesSecurity Starters (in case of injury) Ian Kennedy, Alfredo Aceves, Josh Towers
Long Relief-Alfredo Aceves
Middle Relief- Dave Robertson, Phil Coke, Zach Kroenke
Set-Up- Damaso Marte, Danys Baez (signed to a 2 year deal, the Yankees have been wanting him for a long time)
Closer-Mariano Rivera
So, in my opinion, the Yankees will get younger this offseason, with the bench especially getting younger.
